Route Number 12
Leaderfoot Circular - 13½ km / 8½ miles

An excellent circular walk encompassing open countryside, a steep wooded river valley and views of historic bridges over the River Tweed at Leaderfoot. Return passing the site of old Roman fort, Newstead village and along riverside path back to Melrose.

Start and Finish: Abbey car park, Buccleuch Street.
Time: Allow 4½ to 5 hours
Terrain: Minor roads and good paths, with some stretches muddy after rain. Varied terrain, with one moderate climb up Goat’s Brae and steps on the wooded sections along the Leader Water. Boots or strong shoes are recommended.
Toilets: Abbey Street near car park.
Public transport: Bus services at Earlston, Leaderfoot roundabout and Newstead from / to Melrose.
