Abbotsford and River Tweed - 10 km / 6 miles


Route Map

A moderate walk following the path along the former railway line, and then a quiet road to reach Abbotsford home of Sir Walter Scott between 1812-1832. Explore the Visitor Centre, House and grounds before continuing the walk along the River Tweed following the Borders Abbeys Way back to Melrose.

Start and Finish: Abbey car park Buccleuch Street.
Time: Allow 3 hours
Terrain: Minor roads and mostly good paths, although some stretches along the river could be muddy after rain. Mostly flat or gently sloping (some steps). No special footwear needed.
Toilets: Abbey Street near car park.
